Scientific Breakthroughs And Pre-Diabetes

Recently news reports appeared on the relationship of dolphins and diabetes. Apparently dolphins develope diabetes as a survival mechanism during periods of famine. Is there such a thing as famine among dolphins? Apparently, for some reason, they go long periods with out eating. No one knows how that happens.

The fact that a dolphin has an on and off switch related to the diabetic state is more than a facinating discovery, it’s a potential cure for diabetes. The likelyhood that a biochemical or genetic switch will eventually be revealed is almost certain.

This finding is now being heralded as an exciting hope for future treatment of diabetes. Actually, what are the real chances that this discovery will lead to any improvement in diabetic treatment – very little!

That’s no way to treat a reader, you say, kick the hope right out from under them. The problem is there are two kinds of hope, real hope and false hope.

You have to have been around for a while to get the true flavor of what’s being said here. Scientific breakthroughs harboring great hope are a dime a dozen. Very, very few of these promises ever turn out. Fourty years ago a chemical was discovered in the blood of astronauts that could cause weight loss without effort. There was a lot of hope behind that finding – where is it today?

Scientists not employed by a large organization are usually counting on grant money. Grants generaly are distributed along trends and hot topics. Stiring up another hot topic is part of the academic game.

If you are a corporate scientist then you know your job is not only to invent or discover products, but also to create enough excitement about them to draw new investors.

No researcher, to my knowledge, has counted the number of daily stories describing a new hope. I bet it would be in the hundreds at least. There were two stories about breakthro;ugh drugs and hope for the diabetic on the same day the dolphin dieabetes story appeared.

The message here is that hope stories should not weaken your resolve to do what you can do about your present problem with pre-diabetes or diabetes. Weight loss and exercising may seem just too simplistic to bother with compared to a future drug or treatment – still, it is a proven treatment and the other is not.
